I was walking around this morning, and decided to get a closer look at the huge sprawling factory building near my house that always seems empty and rarely do I see even a car in one of the many parking lots.

Kinja'd!!!

I only took a couple pictures, but I want to go back when I have more time. Most of it is fenced off but the front of the building is accessible, and while I did not see any NO TRESPASSING signs (other than around the little pond out front) I didn’t want venture too close.

I saw the TECUMSEH name still on the front of the building, and did a quick Google search on the way home and just found this from 2003:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

They used to manufacture all kinds of small engines (I had a lawnmower that was Tecumseh powered) but according to Wikipedia and their website sold off everything and now just make compressors and other small machines... no mention of the small engines that everyone knows them for, or the huge plant they just left in the middle of my town.

(Google Maps satellite image for size, houses for scale)

Hmm.... Find out who owns it and rent it out for a small rallyX event?

They made virtually every engine fitted to snow throwers for years. Since they went under every manufacturer makes their “own”(generic/foreign sourced) engines now. It’s kind of a shame since that seemed to allow that practice to flow into other products like mowers and power washers. You almost only find Briggs/Kohler or Honda small engines on higher end units. That said the various engines on snow throwers have proved way more reliable than the Tecumseh’s. Their carburetors were a constant maintenance item.

I wonder what’s all inside.... sometimes I see trucks come and go, but very very infrequent.

This most likely came out of that factory. Was a great little engine until it threw the rod. Had stupid compression as well, I think it was a legit race kart engine from the 70s.

My small engines teacher in high school always said that Tecumseh motors were easier to work on, and easier to make good power out of.

At one time (when I was a teenager mowing grass) Sears lawnmowers had Tecumseh engines. Fuckers were disgustingly dependable.
